Bold claims, and perhaps justified given that the A6 is based on the same platform as the A7 and A8, and thus benefits from a lot of technology. Pretty much anything available on its bigger and more expensive stable comrades, in fact, with the exception of the A8’s AI range. Technologies such as all-wheel steering, the mild hybrid system that allows the engine to stop at up to 99 mph and the dual-touch screen “ MMI touch ” infotainment system. The problem is, the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes E-Class, and Volvo S90 – the A6’s main competition – are all very good cars. The BMW for its driving (an honorable mention for the Jaguar XF too, although it is lacking elsewhere), the Mercedes for its refinement and the S90 for its serenity and Scandinavian charm. If you are a mid-level manager and want a good car, you are not without options. So the Audi A6 can’t just be good – it has to be really good, and in almost every way imaginable, just to compete.

Naturally, it is taller than the car it replaces, 7mm in length, 12mm in width and 2mm in height. And while there are definitely plenty of A4s and A8s in the design – because why wouldn’t there be – we think the A6 is a pretty good thing. Especially in the S-Line finish, which adds a bit of aggression to what is otherwise a very subtle package. Better proportioned than the A4, of course, and (slightly) more interesting than the A4. More differentiates these three than separates classes C, E and S – that’s for sure. The wagon looks particularly good and even better with the bulging arches of the RS6.
