Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello denied reports that the ruling All-Progressive Congress (APC) had a zoning agreement ahead of the 2023 presidential election.
There have been growing calls for the APC to delineate the 2023 presidential ticket in the southern part of Nigeria.
Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State had said the southern region of the country should be allowed to produce Nigeria’s next president in 2023.
The governor joined his counterpart in Kaduna, Governor Nasir El-Rufai and other political figures from the north who had made similar calls in recent days.
But speaking to reporters in Abuja over the weekend, Yahaya Bello said anyone from any zone is free to run for president in 2023 because there is no zoning arrangement in the APC.
He said, “There is no such thing as zoning in our party. In 2015, there was no zoning; many aspirants, including former governor Rochas Okorocha, quarreled.
“In 2019, there was no zoning; the people of APC did not have the courage to challenge President Muhammadu Buhari. “
When asked if he was interested in the 2023 presidency, Bello said, “If it’s God’s will for me to become president of this country at the right time, I will be.”
Kogi’s governor reiterated that he would beat any candidate he decides to run for the 2023 presidency with a record vote.
“I will record a vote that has never been recorded in Nigeria by the grace of God. But that’s not the problem now; the problem is that there must be Nigeria before talking about 2023 ”, added the governor.
