Ms. Delese AA Darko, Executive Director of the FDA, informed the press at the end of the exercise by explaining that these products were adulterated with mercury, hydroquinone or steroids, which could have harmful effects on the consumer.

The use of these products has effects on kidney problems, skin cancer, conbad anomalies and gastrointestinal toxicity.

"According to standards set by the Ghana Standards Authority, such harmful substances are not supposed to be present in cosmetics because of the negative reactions they would leave to consumers," she added.

Recall

In January of this year, the FDA, as part of its regular market surveillance, detected that some 41 cosmetic products on the market contained the aforementioned harmful substances.

The FDA has warned the general public against the favoritism of such products, including the Bravia Unifying body cream, pure cocoa butter and honey extracts and Pbadionela lightening cream.

It further requested companies whose products contained non-approved substances to immediately recall their products to markets, as they posed a potential health risk.

As a result of this directive, the FDA had already eliminated 50 cartons of certain recalled products from the market.

National Exercise

Ms. Darko stated that market surveillance and recall operations were underway in all markets across the country to allow the FDA to ensure that the affected products were not sold secretly to other countries. unsuspecting consumers in other parts of the country.

She added that the FDA had also stepped up surveillance at the country's borders to prevent the smuggling of such harmful products into the country.

"The difficulty is that when products come to the market, it becomes difficult to remember them all. Our men are currently on the ground monitoring the lots and detecting those who have been hit, "she said.

advice

Ms. Darko urged the public to refrain from purchasing products that have been cited as containing harmful substances because of the "long-term effects it would have on them".

She also called on the general public to report to the FDA strange reactions arising from the use of a product, in order to complement its efforts to rid the market of harmful substances.
