There was a near-altercation at a mining site in Tontokrom in the Manso region of Ashanti as a task force attempted to arrest Chinese engaged in illegal mining activities (galamsey).

According to a report YEN.com.gh saw on Joy News TV, the task force was prevented from carrying out the arrest of the Chinese by a group of military men and other heavily built guards.

Narrating the episode in a report, Joy News’ Erastus Asare Donkor said the task force, on their regular tours, visited the Manso forest area.

They encountered the presence of some Chinese who were actively engaged in mining activities in the forest area.

After arguing for a while, the task force arrested the Chinese as they also found a number of military uniforms hanging in makeshift rooms at the compound.

Soon after, the task force was confronted with around 30 military personnel with and with the support of the private guards, they overpowered them.

Private guards who are believed to be affiliated with the nuclear power plant’s Delta and Invincible Forces attacked the media team, smashing the car’s windshield and a side mirror.

The media team was arrested and it took the intervention of senior officials for their release.

According to Asare Donkor’s report, their checks at the Department of Environment and Science indicate that Heritage Imperial owner Donald Tuah had claimed to have licenses that their checks released that the company only has a prospecting license and thus makes their activities in the forest illegal.

In other news, the Supreme Court rejected John Mahama’s interrogation request.

According to the Supreme Court, the hearing of the petition is limited in time, so no room for questioning.

Mahama has filed a petition in court challenging the outcome of the 2020 presidential race.
