Communications and Digitization Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful said 3,000 girls will benefit from this year’s Girls in ICT initiative.
The minister made this known during a press briefing in Accra on Sunday, September 5.
According to Ms Owusu-Ekuful, although the project has been delayed, the government is sure to respect this projection.
“In 2021, we plan to train 3,000 girls in three regions. We are starting late though, but by the end of the year we would have achieved that goal.
“We all know that there is a digital gender divide and a digital skills shortage globally and if we are serious about women also taking the place as partners in the development of our country, they must engage in the digital economy that takes place on a global scale. “
This training, she noted, will help them thrive in the new world of work as traditional jobs are gradually being lost to the opportunities created by these technologies.
The Ablekuma West lawmaker also revealed that nine districts in the Northwest and Preatea Huni Valley region, which did not participate in the training, were selected to introduce 1,000 girls to be trained in computer skills. basic, the fundamentals of programming, scratch and HTML.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Communications completed the training of the first batch of 500 girls. The training of the second class of 500 girls will begin from Monday September 6 to September 11.
On Wednesday September 15, the mentoring event will culminate in Sefwi Wiawso under the global theme “Girls Connected for a Better Tomorrow”.
The minister stressed that the government is concerned with youth development, adding that under the Girls in ICT project, “584 girls from eight districts of the Oti region have been trained in basic computer skills, coding and to HTML in 2020 despite the pandemic. “
The government implemented this project with the support of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), the National Communications Authority (NCA), the Kofi Annan Center of Excellence in ICT and various regional coordination councils.
In addition, MTN, noted Ms. Owusu-Ekuful, has donated GH ¢ 10 million to support the initiative for the next three years.
She therefore urged Ghanaian businesses and well-heeled individuals to emulate the gesture.
“This is a major boost from Ghanaian businesses and we want to encourage other businesses and individuals to support the cause of reducing the digital gender divide in ICT. “
