An unemployed man who stole his Toyota Vitz from a taxi driver after slashing his arm with a broken bottle has been sentenced to 15 years in prison to hard labor by an Accra circuit court.
Brian Ibrahim Adam, alias Red, an unemployed 32-year-old, and Solomon Azure, an unemployed 24-year-old, allegedly took the driver, Emmanuel Asare, from the vehicle and put him on board.
At the end of the trial, the court chaired by Ms. Evelyn Asamoah found Adam guilty of the charges of conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery.
His accomplice, Solomon Azure alias Baba Sulley, alias 2Pac, was sentenced on June 29 to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty with explanation to the same charges.
The same court found Azure guilty on his own plea and sentenced him accordingly.
Chief Inspector Emmanuel Haligah recounted that the complainant Emmanuel Asare is a taxi driver residing in Teshie in Accra.
The prosecution said Salomon resided at the yam market at Agbogbloshie in Accra, while the unemployed Adam resided at the Kumasi airport roundabout in the Ashanti region.
Chief Inspector Haligah said in March last year that Azure met Adam at Avenor Park in Accra and became friends, and the two had since communicated by phone although Adam later left for Kumasi.
The prosecution said Azure informed Adam of a car snatch theft company, claiming he knew a Nana, who had received the vehicles and was willing to pay huge sums of money for it. any taxis brought to him for purchase.
The prosecution said that on May 24 of last year, Adam traveled to Accra and stayed with Azure at the Yam Market in Agbogbloshie.
Chief Inspector Haligah said on May 28 last year that Azure and Adam hatched a plan to steal their cars from taxi drivers. They therefore went to Nungua-Brigade and engaged the services of the complainant who was then in charge of the Toyota Vitz car with registration. GW number 4985-19.
The prosecution said the accused asked the taxi driver to transport them to the Emef estate in Lashibi, while Azure sat behind the driver with Adam in the front seat.
The prosecution said that upon reaching a place around the Emef Estates road, Azure alerted the driver that he would like to get off, so the driver stopped the vehicle. The prosecution said Azure got out and walked to the driver’s door as if he was going to pay the price, but Adam remained in the front seat.
Chief Inspector Haligah said Azure opened the driver’s door and started pulling him out of his seat, but the driver got stuck in his seat because of a seat belt he was wearing.
He said Azure then broke a bottle he was holding and slashed the complainant’s left arm and pulled him out of the car.
The prosecution said Adam quickly jumped on the wheel and Azure joined him, and the two sped off with the vehicle.
He said the complainant reported the incident to Sakumono police, where he received a medical report form to seek medical attention.
The prosecution said that on June 3 of last year, the plaintiff went to the Criminal Investigation Department of Sakumono Police Station and saw Azure and Adam.
He said the complainant identified them to police as the ones who stole his vehicle.
The prosecution said that Azure and Adam in their cautionary statement admitted the offense where both defendants indicated that they gave the vehicle to Nana and Dida.
