We must actually go back to "Avengers: Age of Ultron" when Bruce – Hulk – was found in a Quinjet. Even though Black Widow reminded him to band together with others, he shortened the transmission and headed alone. Somewhere along the line, he eventually became champion of the grand master champions' contest in Sakaar. It is there that Thor finds him in "Thor: Ragnarok" and manages, for the first time in years, to reconvert Hulk into Bruce. This is where the communication problems of Bruce and Hulk begin first, which continues in "Avengers: Infinity War".
Later, Bruce finds himself on a ship with the Asgardians, Thor and Loki escaping. Thanos intercepts them to take the stone from the Tesseract's space, because of course, Loki has the Tesseract again. In the chaos that ensues, Bruce, as a Hulk, is thrown from the ship and projected into the space where he crashes on Earth, in the midst of Dr. Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum. Bruce is the one who announces the coming of Thanos.
That's when Bruce learns on Earth that he has trouble connecting to the Big Guy who does not want to go out and fight for the moment. When he goes to Wakanda with the rest of the Avengers on Earth, hoping to destroy the stone of the spirit before Thanos can get it, he dons himself. 39; Hulkbuster armor from Iron Man. A Hulk in a Hulkbuster costume? It's like a Hulk creation.
Although he is a bit clumsy, Bruce is able to understand how to fight and destroy his fair share of Thanos' army. However, that is not enough. Thanos is still able to complete his Gauntlet Infinity and move away from humanity.
With Tony Stark gone (no one knows he's still here, somewhere), now Bruce is the only Science Bro left on Earth, which means all the technical tasks have to go through him. At the end of "Captain Marvel", we see Bruce trying to break through the mysterious pager left by Nick Fury. Who knows what Bruce will be responsible for doing next, and that most likely means that he will stay on Earth. In the trailers published for "Avengers: Endgame", we do not see Bruce donning any armor, unlike the rest of the Avengers. In addition, there is no sign of Hulk either and maybe Bruce still can not convince him to go out when needed.
Right now, it's unclear exactly how Bruce joins the fight, so we'll have to wait and see. Hoping that Hulk will join us too.
