An announcement by the Sudanese army is now expected, suggesting that the 30-year term of President Omar al-Bashir will end.
Tens of thousands of people have been organizing a protest vigil outside the army headquarters since Saturday to demand the sacking of the president.
Two nights in a row, they were attacked by the intelligence services and the militias who were loyal to it – and in both cases, the army intervened to protect them.
It was an early sign of a fracture in a security institution that had never been stronger.
