Four years ago, Ghana was plunged into a state of mourning after the loss of life following a flood in the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.
On June 3, 2015, Ghanaians woke up to hear about an incident in which over 150 people were burned to death after a heavy downpour.
YEN.com.gh brings you four heartbreaking disasters that have stormed Ghana:
1. The stadium disaster (9 May 2001):
May 9, 2001 was listed in the history books of Ghana as the largest stadium disaster ever.
During a match between rivals Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko, a fight broke out leading to the disaster.
More than 100 football fans have died as a result of an air leak and tear gas after fans have attempted to escape.
In addition to the outburst, tear gas was thrown into the crowd to prevent them from fighting, but it resulted in death.
Until today, the disaster of May 9 is commemorated to educate football fans to no longer engage in such fights.
2. Inundation of the circle (June 3, 2015):
When heavy rains fell on the night of June 2, 2019, no one knew that the next day was going to cause the biggest catastrophe caused by a flood.
As early as the dawn of June 3, 2015, news began circulating about Ghanaians who were burned after the explosion of a gas station at Circle, in the heart of Accra.
The disaster killed more than 150 people. Most of them were burned by the fire that followed the blast.
3. Catastrophe of the Kintampo waterfall (March 19, 2017):
It was a sad moment for Ghana, as students from Wenchi High School died during an excursion to Kintampo Waterfall.
The disaster occurred after the fall of a number of trees while students were bathing in the water.
The reports revealed that 20 people died as a result of this incident. 17 died on the spot and the other 3 lost their lives in the hospital. It was indeed a sad moment for Ghana and this led to the renovation of the Kintampo waterfall.
4. Road accident in Kintampo (March 22, 2019):
The accident occurred on the Kintampo-Techiman road is a serious accident that will be part of the history books of Ghana.
On March 22, 2019, two buses collided on the Kintampo-Techiman road, killing 57 pbadengers.
Police said the fatal accident occurred around 2 am in a town called Ampoma, in the Bono East area.
Most of those killed were commuters from Garu-Tempane heading for Kumasi in the Ashanti region.
Although 53 people survived the accident, it was a deadly event that plunged Ghana into sadness.
