John Mahama
Former President John Mahama seeks to be the first man in the country to return in 2021, but the return to government headquarters is expected to continue with a tour of apology nationwide.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) primaries are scheduled for March 2019.
Mahama is competing with about seven other people who want to lead the NDC in 2020.
Mahama is clearly the favorite and so it will be a surprise if he has not yet started preparing for the general elections against President Nana Akufo-Addo.
There is really not much to say for the moment if Mahama can defeat Akufo-Addo. However, it is important that the ex-president apologize for things that did not go too well under his reign.
Here's why.
1. He was not forgiven for Dead Goat and others
One of the charges that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) liked to launch against John Mahama when he was president was that he had become arrogant and vain.
The nickname "Dead Goat" came and unfortunately for him, most remember Mahama for that.
But it will be refreshing for a Ghanaian politician to say, "I'm sorry, I could have done better."
2. He seems to be a relatable and fallible human being
For a man who wants to become president again, it is clear that Mahama wants to be accepted again in our good graces. So why do not you apologize and nobody would consider you as "Mr Perfect".
In fact, if he does, the pressure will be on Mahama's opponent at the NPP to show him that power has not come to him.
3. The 2020 elections would not be about better policies
The 2020 elections would not determine who has better policies. It would be to know who, between Akufo-Addo and Mahama, is a favorable personality.
The two men would each have had a mandate and their policies would have been known to the people.
What more can they promise than to say, "I'm better than him?"
4. It will be good for the NDC base
One of the things that the NDC claimed to have caused their defeat in 2016 was that their base had not voted.
To make matters worse, they are heading for a highly controversial presidential primary.
John Mahama will never win 2020, he is not seen as a leader of a united front.
