(Jamaica Gleaner) Annette Hannan, the mother of four-year-old Rihanna Rupon, who died of dengue last week, says she is angry and devastated by the death of her child.
For her, Rihanna would be alive if the health authorities had been more open to the public about the threat of dengue fever.
How Rihanna got sick
Hannan said that on December 14, 2018, her daughter developed an extremely high fever. She took her to the doctor's office where she was prescribed Cataflam, among other medicines containing aspirin, because the doctor thought she had an infection of her throat and throat.
"After she takes the medicine and I realize she's starting to heat up, I say I'm not going to sit with her and I'm wearing it [Bustamante Hospital for] Children.
"When I arrived at Children's, they examined her and gave her more Panadol, and then ordered a blood test to determine the cause of the fever," Hannan said.
Health has deteriorated
She stated that while waiting for the badessment, she realized that her daughter, who was sitting on her lap, had become extremely weak and had then self-nurtured herself.
She then rushed Rihanna into the bathroom to clean her, where, according to her, she vomited and her limbs became stiff.
She said that she went back to the doctor to explain what had happened.
According to the mother, the doctor told her that the four-year-old girl was responding to the pain she was feeling.
She said that, realizing that the child was not getting better, the doctors had told him that they should have a scan and a dengue test.
According to her, the doctors said the process would take some time in Bustamante and advised her to go to the Kingston Public Hospital to get a shorter turnaround time for testing.
Hannan said that she followed the recommendation.
Brain death
"The result came back, she has dengue, then on Tuesday the 18th, she immediately goes to the ICU (Intensive Care Unit of Bustamante Hospital)
]and she was spitting blood, and things escaped from her stomach. Dengue licks her brain, she will never heal, "said the mother.
She stated that during her admission to the hospital, the doctors had tried to remove drugs from Rihanna's body in order to perform a brain operation.
The child would eventually become brain dead and be placed under vital surveillance.
The Rihanna survival machine was finally disconnected on January 9, 2019 and Hannan said to have fainted shortly thereafter.
The mother says that she is still angry and sad about the death of her daughter.
Brilliant Rihanna
"I do not blame the doctor who gives my child this Cataflam. I would blame the Minister of Health. Her carelessness, my child lost her life, and she was so bright.
"When she went to basic school, the teachers were amazed. When she was in clbad four, they put her in clbad five to how smart she was, and when you feel depressed, she just told me one day, "said the clueless mother.
The Gleaner tried to get a comment from the Ministry of Health, but the promised answer did not materialize.
In a statement to Parliament on January 3, 2019, the Minister of Health, Dr. Christopher Tufton, stated that the Ministry's enhanced vector control activities began in July 2018 and have now been extended until March 2019. to include another 500 temporary workers, who join the effort to identify and eliminate mosquito breeding sites.
This, he said, is in addition to the conversion of the Ministry of Health's vector control work earlier in the year.
He added that the Ministry of Health had confirmed that Jamaica had exceeded the dengue epidemic threshold based on the number of cases reported in December 2018.
Tufton noted that it was the first time in December that Jamaica was exceeding the epidemic threshold of 96 cases, with 123 dengue statements.
