Five people are reported missing after crossing the Offin River in Achiase, a community in the Nyinahin region in the Ashanti region.
Eyewitnesses said nine people were trapped earlier on the river on Friday, but four were rescued.
Several rescue teams frequent the river in vain.
Mainly farmers, community members have their farms and properties beyond the Offin River in the Achiase community of Atwima Mponua district.
Crossing the river to find their livelihood has been a long-standing routine. But locals say the river overflowed from its banks during the recent heavy rains.
Nine people were stranded in the river when the canoe they were using to cross capsized. Four have been rescued, but the five have yet to be found.
As the color of the Offin River continues to turn yellowish, some people have blamed the activities of illegal miners for the unsuccessful rescue effort.
Meanwhile, the chairman of the unit’s committee, Daniel Adu, wants the authorities to honor their promise to give them larger canoes to travel between their farms and their homes.
Search and rescue efforts continue.
