Five people were shot and wounded in Ntotroso in Asutifi North district of Ahafo region after clashes with police.
The five were among a group of suspected illegal miners who stormed a mining concession owned by Newmont to protest the arrest of some of their colleagues, who had been accused of carrying out illegal mining activities on the concession.
Ahafo Police Command public relations officer ASP Isaac Kwame Loh said the young protesters stormed the Newmont premises and started attacking security guards at the station in ” opening fire on them ”.
He said several attempts to stop the “firing of their weapons” failed, forcing the police to launch a retaliatory attack, leaving five injured.
“They had weapons like swords and action rifles and broke into the camp amid gunfire. The police had warned, but they did not listen. They ignored the police warning and started shooting at the camp, so the police retaliated to demobilize the crowd and as a result five men were injured, ”ASP Loh explained on Eyewitness News.
ASP Loh said police had yet to make any arrests following the attack.
Newmont Ghana Limited’s communications and external relations director Agbeko Azumah said “no Newmont employee was injured”.
