CARTHAGE, N.C. (WNCN) – Five students from Moore County Schools were confirmed to have pertussis, county officials said Monday.

The five pertussis cases, also known as whooping cough, involved students from West End Elementary School, Southern Pines Primary School, and Pinecrest High School.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention described whooping cough as a highly contagious respiratory disease.

Infected individuals suffered from uncontrollable and sometimes violent coughing fits.

"We appreciate the partnership with the Moore County Schools. We encourage people to contact us or consult their health care provider if they become ill and their vaccines are up to date, "said Robert Wittmann, Director of Health.

The best way to protect yourself against whooping cough is to get vaccinated.
