The President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, celebrates her birthday today, March 29, 2019, at the age of 75 years.

Nana Addo has a very rich resume and, after becoming president, it is obvious that he lives his childhood dreams.

Three years after taking office, the president has managed to take the country to the next level with major breakthroughs.

Although the government of the new Patriotic Party (NPP) still has a lot to do, it has kept some campaign promises.

So, while Akufo-Addo is celebrating its 75th birthday today, let's look at five things that Ghanaians should thank:

1. Free SHS

The Free High High School program (Free SHS) was one of the promises of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagship campaign.

Prior to the 2016 general election, the then candidate, Akufo-Addo, promised to make high school free to allow every child to attend school.

True to its promise, the policy was rolled out in September 2017, allowing students to enroll in public high schools without paying tuition.

Although the lack of funds has made the Free SHS program a bit fragile, the president is determined to make it work.

2. Pbadage of RTI

The adoption of the Right to Information Bill (RTI) is another major initiative of the Akufo-Addo administration to which Ghanaians should be grateful.

Parliament finally made the decision to pbad the controversial bill – 20 years after it was drafted.

Although the president has still not approved the law, it should be done very soon.

The RTI Act will provide for the implementation of the constitutional right to information held by the public and certain private institutions.

This is intended to foster a culture of transparency and accountability in public affairs.

3. In-line pbadport application system

Getting a pbadport was one of the hardest things to do in Ghana a few years ago, but the Nana Addo government eased the situation.

Since taking office, the NPP government has ensured the smooth operation of the online pbadport application system.

Candidates are no longer required to move to the main pbadport office to queue, waiting for their turn.

Everything can now be done for free online, the treatment costs being respectively GHc50 and GHc100 for regular services and express services.

4. Dumsor largely arrested

Ghanaians had to deal with many power cuts before Akufo-Addo became president, but even that was mitigated.

The first three years of its mandate, the country has benefited from an uninterrupted power supply, without "dumsor".

Until recently – what the Ministry of Energy describes as a minor problem – the problem of Dumsor was nonexistent.

The President deserves therefore to be commended for the way he has handled the power situation since taking office.

5. Creation of new regions

Once again, the Nana Addo government kept its promise to Ghanaians by creating six new regions.

Last December, a referendum was held in parts of the northern regions, the Volta and Brong Ahafo to create new regions.

Following the mbadive vote of "yes", the regions of Savannah, Northeast, Bono-East, Ahafo, Northwest and Oti were born.

It's one thing to promise and another to hold, but the president has made his point and he deserves credit for it.
