Operation Vanguard's staff has apprehended 50 suspected illegal miners in the Western and Eastern areas as part of various recent operations.
On July 13th of this year, West Region personnel arrested 16 suspects of illegal Chinese miners in the Enchi Kwahu Headquarters, in Aowin District, as well as 5 excavators on the place where they operated.
While 34 other suspected illegal juveniles were also arrested last Friday in the East Akim municipality, in the East region.
Captain Andy Sowatey, the team's public relations officer, told the Ghana news agency in an interview to Takoradi, that the suspects, made up of locals and strangers, had been apprehended in the region of Asiakwa.
He added that nine of the local residents had been handed over to the Kibi police for prosecution, while the others, consisting of 16 Chinese, 22 Guineans and 3 Burkinabés, as well as 5 excavators, had been handed over. Interdepartmental Committee on Minor Crime (IMCIM) for follow-up.
Captain Sowatey stated that while the task force was receiving information through information provided by some locals, others had also resorted to shelters for illegal miners.
He added that some of the illegal miners had rented homes in different areas where Galamsey was endemic and were wreaking havoc on the water and forests.
He called on traditional authorities and local residents to help get out of hiding these unlicensed operators and their collaborators to preserve the environment from further deterioration.
