Compared to the greatly reduced number of just a few months ago, more than 5,000 people have been quarantined in the United States as part of the immigration and customs control process due from exposure to mumps or chicken pox. This year alone, more than 1,000 cases of mumps have been reported in the United States.
In quarantine in ICE
According to ICE, 5,200 adult immigrants were quarantined because of their exposure to chicken pox or mumps. Of these, 4,200 are quarantined due to exposure to mumps, 800 have been exposed to chicken pox, while 100 have been exposed to both.
These numbers show a dramatic increase over a few months ago, when there were fewer people in quarantine. In fact, an ICE official told CNN that the agency had so far received reports of mumps and chicken pox in 39 immigration detention centers across the country.
To be clear, not all people in quarantine have measles or chicken pox, but have at least been exposed to the contagious disease. What is worrisome, however, is that even though the agency had previously treated diseases such as measles and chickenpox, it was only last September that mumps became have been registered.
Those in quarantine will be detained for 25 days from the last incubation period.
Mumps in the United States
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this year alone, 1,002 cases of mumps have been reported. It is a contagious disease that can be easily transmitted through saliva, mucus, coughing, sneezing or speech. It can also be transmitted by sharing utensils with an infected person, or even by simply touching a surface previously touched by the infected.
Last week, an outbreak of mumps at the Harris County Jail in Houston forced staff to isolate 14 people and quarantine hundreds of other inmates. In addition, last March, thousands of Temple University students signed a petition calling for the closure of the school due to an outbreak of mumps on campus .
Until now, the best way to prevent measles is still the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine, 88% effective for the prevention of mumps, once two vaccines have been administered.
