56% of consumers who make international calls change service, new survey finds

“The message seems clear, consumers want to switch existing providers and take the call from a mobile handset,” said Andreas Bernstrom, CEO of Rebtel.

Rebtel, the world’s largest independent mobile phone company, today announced the first part of a two-part survey conducted in September 2010 on its behalf by Harris Interactive Online, which measured consumer sentiment about services and long distance providers.

According to responses, a strong majority (56%) of American adults who make international phone calls would change the way they make them. The study also found that more than 2 in 5 adults (43%) say they would use their mobile phone to make these calls. “The message seems clear, consumers want to switch existing providers and take the call from a mobile handset,” said Andreas Bernstrom, CEO of Rebtel.

Among adults who said they would switch to their cell phones, 19% said they would use special long distance plans, while 16% said they would use their mobile phone using regular calling rates operators. A surprising 11% said they would use a VoIP service / application.

“This represents a major opportunity for businesses and services to call in to capture the majority of the US consumer market. Our results show that international calls constitute a large open market for innovative and inexpensive calling services, and will allow services like Google Voice to pose a real threat to operators. “

In terms of video calls, 14% of Americans said they currently make them, and 34% of respondents said they would be willing to pay a monthly fee. “This opens up a new non-ad-based revenue model for providers like Skype looking to monetize their video services,” Bernstrom said. Of those who answered “yes” to these calls, 15% said they would. be willing to pay less than $ 5, 7% saying they would be willing to spend between $ 5 and $ 10 per month. 6% said they would spend more than $ 10, and 6% said they would willing to pay whatever the cost.

Of those who answered “ yes ” to paying monthly charges for these calls, 44% said they would be willing to pay less than $ 5, with 21% saying they would be willing to spend between $ 5 and $ 10. USD per month. 18% said they would spend more than $ 10 and 17% would be willing to pay whatever the cost.

This survey was conducted online in the United States by Harris Interactive on behalf of Rebtel from September 1-3, 2010 among 2,258 adults aged 18 and over.
