Professor Kwesi Yankah, Minister of State for Higher Education, reiterated that the government was ready to create a four-year Bachelor of Education degree that would replace the Diploma in Basic Education. as a minimum requirement for teaching at all levels of the education system. .
According to Professor Yankah, the government supported the United Kingdom's program for international development through the Transforming Education and Teacher Learning (T-TEL) program to build capacity and improve the quality of teacher training to meet educational needs. from the country.
This government initiative, he said, would provide teachers with 21st century learning and teaching experiences.
Professor Kwesi Yankah made this statement at the inauguration of the Boards of Governors of the six colleges of education in Accra on Friday.
The six colleges inaugurated included the Akatsi College of Education, the Bagabaga College of Education, the Enchi College of Education, the College of Our Lady of Apostle (OLA), the Fosu College of Education and the Saint Francis College of Education .
He also noted that the centers of excellence would belong to five public universities, such as the University of Ghana and the University of Cape Coast, for a three-year transition under the direction of the National Council of higher education.
"It's very important, because you have to use your skills to guide the process so that the transition runs smoothly and does not lack credibility. I have no doubt that you possess the qualities necessary for the transition colleges to be smooth, "he said.
Citing Finland, Norway, Singapore and Taiwan as beneficiaries, he said the rigorous selection process for teachers was consistent with high quality learning outcomes reflected in international fora.
Professor Yankah also added that in order for teachers to be recognized as professionals, it was imperative that they be licensed at all levels of education to improve the teaching profession. education.
