6 signs and symptoms of constipation that may surprise you

Constipation is not the badiest subject, but despite this, it is something more that suffers from us than you think. According to Guts UK, one in seven of us suffers from constipation, medically defined by "difficulty in opening the bowels". Or, in plain English, hardly to poop.

However, a new study by King's College London suggests that a new definition might be needed, because of differences in the way doctors and the public perceive the disease.

the BBC reports that less than one-third of those surveyed would identify "infrequent bowel movements" as a sign of constipation, which led researchers to develop a new list of symptoms that would better define what is constipation, so that people can manage it more effectively.

The new symptoms are grouped into six categories, as follows:

  • Abdominal discomfort, pain and bloating
  • Rectal discomfort – bleeding caused by excessive pushing, pain or burning sensation in the bad area
  • Uncommon stools and hard stools – normal can be anywhere between three times a day and three times a week depending on the individuals
  • Sensory dysfunction – do not want to go there or have the feeling of still needing to go there
  • Flatulence and bloating – noisy or smelly wind
  • Fecal incontinence – uncontrolled leakage or rectal bleeding

Guts UK claims that there may be various causes of constipation, including food, medications, emotions, eating disorders, irregular meals, reduced fluid intake and physical activity scaled down. Sometimes it can be an indicator of another underlying disease, such as bowel cancer or celiac disease.

Speaking to BBCThe author of the study, Dr. Eirini Dimidi, urged people to "consult your doctor if you have bowel symptoms".
