636 people perish in traffic accidents

Tamale, May 30, GNA – Mr. David Osafo Adoteng,
Director of Planning and Programs at the National Road Safety Commission
(NRSC) revealed that a total of 636 people lost their lives by road
accidents from January to May this year.

He said that the majority of accidents were
caused by motorcyclists and tricycles due to a lack of adequate education
on its use on the roads.

Mr. Adoteng revealed this to Tamale during a
Northern Stakeholder Consultation Workshop on the Safe Use of Motorcycles
tricycles in the country, organized by the Ministry of Transport and funded
by UKAID.

The event consisted of proposing amendments to the
traffic rules 2012, L.l. 2180 and the use of the motorcycle and
tricycle and its regulatory framework.

Rule 128 of L.I.2180 means that

According to him, research has revealed that

but and operating commercially as well and this needs to be addressed.

He added that most of these operators did not have
trained in how to recognize and use road signs, which caused a great deal of

He said less than 30 percent of the motor users
wear protective helmets while driving.

Regional Minister advised motorists to reduce excessive speed and use
their helmets when they use the road to save lives.

He urged the authorities of the transport sector
sector to enforce the law on motorcyclists and to make sure that they have
license and insurance before traveling the roads.

Stakeholders advised the government to find
ways to streamline tricycle services in the country to improve
transport system especially in rural areas where transport is a
challenge.

They suggested providing affordable services
