10 things I hate about you has aged surprisingly well since its theatrical release in 1999. It’s a ’90s high school version of William Shakespeare The Tamed Shrew, and stars Julia Stiles as Kat and the late Heath Ledger as Patrick. Kat’s younger sister Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) can’t go out unless Kat does, but Kat isn’t interested in the dating scene in high school. Alice wu Half is a very loose and modern tale by Edmond Rostand Cyrano de Bergerac, in which Ellie Chu (Leah Lewis) writes love letters for Aster Flores (Alexxis Lemire) on behalf of Paul Munsky (Daniel Diemer). Much like the original play, Ellie realizes that she has feelings for Aster as well, which complicates things in more ways than one.
Half is more of a coming-of-age teen drama than a strict romantic comedy, but it shares enough themes with the genre to be included here. In addition, the relationship dynamic is fascinating and the storytelling is topical. It even received the Founders’ Award for Best Narrative Fiction at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival.
4. Love, Simon
Love, Simon is a 2018 romantic comedy based on Becky Albertalli Simon against the Homo Sapiens Agenda. The film follows Simon Spier (Nick Robinson), a locked-in gay teenager who begins communicating with another gay teenager in his high school, known only by the pseudonym “Blue”. Things quickly get complicated when their emails are discovered by another student, who blackmails Simon by threatening to take him out unless Simon helps him convince one of Simon’s best friends, Abby.
Love, Simon is a teenage romantic comedy and coming-of-age story with high stakes and big emotional arcs. Last year, a spinoff series titled Love, Victor debuted on Hulu.
5. The Princess Diaries
The diary of a princess is a longtime favorite for Anne Hathaway and Dame Julie Andrews, who play Mia Thermopolis and Queen Clarisse Renaldi respectively. Mia is an average – albeit awkward – high school student who has a crush on the most popular guy in school. Then her paternal grandmother comes to visit her and Mia learns that she is in fact a princess, and the next vying for the throne of a small (fictional) European country called Genovia.
As Mia learns the ins and outs of being a princess, she also learns how to be a best friend, communicate with loved ones, set boundaries, and make mistakes without being devastated by them. Many cite The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement like the best movie, but the first lays the foundation (and has a sweet high school romance, to boot).
6. Love and basketball
Love and basketball is a romantic sports drama about neighbors Quincy (Omar Epps) and Monica (Sanaa Lathan), who fall in love as they pursue their respective basketball careers – which therefore means they continue to go their separate ways, and then to get back together.
The film spans several years, which gives a glimpse into the growth of the characters as individuals, athletes, and as a couple. It also deals with heavier topics than most of the other movies on this list, but it’s a staple for its incredible performance and beautiful storyline.
7. The ball
Ryan Murphy’s Netflix Musical, Prom, is based on the musical of the same name with music by Matthew Sklar, lyrics by Chad Beguelin and a book by Bob Martin and Beguelin, based on an original concept by Jack Viertel. The film chronicles the year-end chaos surrounding a conservative high school’s attempts to stop a lesbian college student from bringing another girl to the ball, which is made worse when a group of narcissistic Broadway stars catch the wind. the story on Twitter and decides to help, in order. to improve their image as artists.
Prom has a stellar soundtrack and an incredible cast, and its story seems to be at least partially inspired by actual events. It’s the only musical on this list, but it’s wild insanity with plenty of evocative moments that are worth checking out, even for those who don’t necessarily like musicals.

Although 2019 Booksmart isn’t necessarily a romantic comedy, it follows a similar formula as it follows studious best friends Molly (Beanie Feldstein) and Amy (Kaitlyn Dever), who attempt to go to the biggest party in town the night before their high school diploma. It’s a hijink-filled comedy with lots of crushes, dating, and romance, but Molly and Amy’s relationship is the heart of the movie.
To all the boys fans who love Lara Jean and Christine’s (Madeleine Arthur) relationship, in particular, will love the tone of Booksmart and his clever take on teen comedy.
