She said the AFJ program sought to support the government's job creation agenda.
Acting on measures put in place to develop the aquaculture sector, she said that "the AFJ needs to supplement the current activities of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture. Agriculture for Jobs in Food and Employment ".
According to the Minister, "at full strength, the program is expected to create 80,000 additional direct and indirect jobs along the aquaculture value chain and provide an additional 50,000 tonnes of fish over a period of three (3) years for the country ".
She announced that "the AFJ program will involve 2,000 National Builders Corps (NABCO) youth who will be trained to provide extension services to aquaculturists".
Beneficiaries
The minister said that "the first beneficiaries of the AFJ are the fish farm of James Camp prison."
She added that "the prison had 3,000 fingerlings and 235 bags of fish food in January 2019. Two (2) other ponds of 400 m2 each are under construction as part of the AFJ".
According to her, "the focus is on the construction and management of ponds. The government will expand the project to create new job opportunities under Phase 2. "
At the same time, she said, "In the context of aquaculture development, the Ministry has facilitated the activities of aquaculture operators by providing more extension services and more. other cost-effective knowledge, skills and technologies ".
She noted that "this has led to an increase in production from 52,471 tonnes in 2016 to 76,620 tonnes in 2018, an increase of 46%."
Projects
In 2018, she stated that "32 dams and underground shelters have been replenished in the three northern regions, with ten million juveniles of Tilapia, African catfish and Heterotis in thirty-two (32). ) communities. For example. Kogbufion and Kokoligu (Nandom District), Naburenye (Lawra District), Gentilpe (Sawla Tuna District) and Dikunani (Savelugu District -Nanton). The goal is to increase fish supply and reduce protein deficiencies in these communities. "
As part of efforts to strengthen intersectoral collaboration for the development of the aquaculture industry, she added that "the Ministry has established a National Aquaculture Committee composed of experts from academia, industry and regulators ".
She noted that the Committee was charged with deliberating on problems that were causing problems in the industry and proposing solutions to be implemented by the Ministry of Finance.
She added that educational institutions and other farms had been identified in all regions for the implementation of the project.
