Bournemouth goalie suffered a thumb fracture at the training camp at Quinta Do Lago.
After medical treatment and an x-ray, it was decided to send the young man back to his home.
"It's an injury that Alan Kelly [goalkeeping coach] and the doc [Alan Byrne] I have never seen … he has a broken thumb fracture, "McCarthy told FAI TV.
"It's really sad for us because he's a good boy and a good goalkeeper, but he has to go back and get it fixed he wants to be ready for the start of the match [Premier League] season."
Travers was second behind Darren Randolph for June 7 with Denmark and the June 10 meeting with Gibraltar.
