Tumu Secondary Technical High School
Tumu Secondary High Technical High School in the Upper West region was shut down for an indefinite period following the student demonstrations on Thursday night.
The police also collected some 23 students after the disturbances.
Students demonstrated and destroyed properties belonging to the school.
They would also have cut school power and ransacked the bungalows of some teachers. Their action was to protest against the seizure of their cell phones by school authorities.
The scale of the damage has not yet been determined, according to Evans Kpebah, Regional Director of Education for the Upper West, who has confirmed this news to Citi News.
"It's a painful decision. We are not happy about it. But in the opinion of the Municipal Security Council and the PTA board chairman, it is not advisable to keep the students, "he said.
Mr. Kpebah noted that "some culprits have been arrested and we want to conduct more investigations and we are settled".
The closure also affects the final year students taking the West Africa undergraduate certificate exams.
"The third year is also affected. They will also be getting extorted every morning to write their exams, "Kpebah said.
A similar incident occurred at Nkwanta High School in the Volta Region in October 2018.
The school was closed indefinitely following student riots after the school authorities seized and destroyed their mobile phones.
The police eventually arrested 30 students as a result of the incident.
