User ratings on iTunes can be misleading when trying to choose the movie to buy or rent. A perfectly execrable movie might have four or five stars thanks to the efforts of a small group of fans to improve its rating.
The latest addition to iTunes therefore seems particularly useful to avoid buying or renting a failed movie: from now on, the iTunes Movie Shop offers reviews of Top Critics and the rating given by the Tomatometer at Rotten Tomatoes, a movie review aggregation site that lets you know at a glance what critics think about the movie you're about to buy.
I hope this is only the first step towards Apple to incorporate more external review data into iTunes. Being able to see at a glance if a movie is worth my time, it's great, but it would be fantastic to see the same type of aggregation happen when I want to buy a new album, or even an App Store game.
