The Black Star, fallen skipper of the national football team, has been asked to give up a new position created for him within the team he has been leading for seven years.

Veteran journalist Kweku Baako Jnr described the post of "Captain General" as "a worthless animal" and shared the hope that the 2010 African BBC footballer would reject this position.

Already, the decision to name Ghana's deadliest scorer as captain general has caused much mockery of large parts of social media.

Coach Kwesi Appiah entrusted him with the job after eliminating Gyan from the captain's position and entrusted him to former U20 World Cup winner Dede Ayew, 29 years old.

The position of captain general was first created for John Mensah when Asamoah Gyan was to take over from Black Stars defender John Mensah.

But persisting with the position in 2019 was perceived as an appeasement attempt by Gyan after he announced that he was retiring from the team while the decision to strip him of the capitanerie loomed on the horizon. Asamoah Gyan once engraved his image on the captain's group.

"Asamoah Gyan should have rejected him … I'm waiting for him to reject him," Baako said in JoyNews' journal, Newsfile, Saturday.

The controversy surrounding the captaincy cast a shadow over Ghana's desire to win the 2019 African Nations Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt, ending 37 years.

"The truth is that I do not see too many prospects," Baako had a hard time believing that the Black Stars could conquer Africa.

He accused Asamoah Gyan of "sowing the seed for the mess," causing "avoidable dramatization" with his ad withdrawing from the team.

It took the intervention of the president, Nana Akufo-Addo, to get Gyan to cancel his decision. The action of the president is added to the list of presidential interventions in the management of the Black Stars.

Kweku Baako, however, said he wished the president did not intervene and expressed concern that Nana Akufo-Addo's involvement would create problems.

"Honestly, it's a mess … it's a mess," said the editor of the New Crusading Guide.

Randy Abbey, former spokesman for the Ghana Football Federation, also believes that the position of captain general is useless.

He likened it to being a member of the State Council and explained that in football, such positions can be patronizing.
