Snapchat expanded music planning featurs

As TikTok continues to be incredibly popular around the world, Snapchat is looking to expand its support for music. The Wall Street Journal reports that Snap is in talks with record companies to "expand the means by which users can include music in their publications" on Snapchat.

Snap already licenses music licenses on a case-by-case basis. Today, however, the company is seeking to expand its access to music with extensive rights to Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group. This access, however, would not be intended for a streaming music service on demand such as Apple Music.

Snap's agreements with labels would allow Snapchat users to embed music into their creations. This feature is currently offered by both TikTok and Instagram, both of whom have been eating in the Snapcaht user base. The Wall Street Journal report explains that TikTok is taking advantage of low-cost licensing deals for its music features:

ByteDance operates under low-cost licenses developed with Musical.ly, a simplified video service acquired in 2017 that allows users to create music videos with lip sync. ByteDance merged Musical.ly with TikTok last August and now has 700 to 800 million users through its applications.

TikTok is the most downloaded iOS app in the last five quarters, and it's clearly starting to hit big names like Snapchat and Instagram. Earlier this month, Instagram revamped its IGTV interface with a new TikTok algorithmic flow.

It is not known when Snapchat aims to offer new music features to users. Today's report warns, however, that Snap is still negotiating with labels and has not yet finalized the licensing agreements.
