Magic Johnson, Canadian Olympians and Blue Jays tweet support for Raptors after historic victory

Fans took to the streets of Toronto, sounding horns and fireworks in the overcast sky after Kawhi Leonard scored 27 points to help the Raptors qualify for their first-ever NBA finals. 100-94 win over Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday night.

But many fans have also turned to Twitter and other social media to express their joy at seeing the NBA franchise reach new heights in 24 years.

"Congratulations to the Toronto Raptors' organization, my good friend President Masai Ujiri, the coaches and the Raptors players!" Said Magic Johnson, NBA Hall of Fame member.

The Canadian Olympians were also delighted with this victory and tweeted their support for the Raptors.

"Eastern Conference CHAMPS! Congratulations Raptors! All of Canada is heading to KAWHIAAZY! Said Scott Moir, gold medalist at the Olympic Ice Dance Games, in Ilderton, Ontario.

Three-time sprinter and three-time Olympic medalist Andre de Grbade of Markham, Ont., Angered fans who were worried about what he would have seen the Raptors when he tweeted "HOLY !!! Are we on the verge of going to our very first NBA Finals' before the final ring.

De Grbade added quickly: "Wait 29 more seconds!" With an emoji of hands clasped in prayer.

Peter Mansbridge, retired CBC News presenter, who has a photo of Leonard screaming like his avatar on Twitter, wondered if the superstar striker could possibly help the Toronto Maple Leafs, victims from a 52-year-old Stanley Cup drought.

"Do you think Kawhi has a chance to skate?" Joked Mansbridge.

Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas told Mansbridge, "It's a great question, Peter!"

New York Times sports reporter John Branch was inspired by the drought that hit the Stanley Cup in Canada, dating back to the Montreal Canadiens' 1993 victory.

"If you told me, 25 years ago, that a Canadian team would qualify for the NBA finals before winning the Stanley Cup finals again, I would have thought you had drunk too much of Zima, "said Branch.

Several Blue Jays members have expressed support for their Toronto teammate.

"Shout at the raptor man. Amazing amazing. The city is on fire. Continue! Said Marcus Stroman, attending the Scotiabank Arena with his rotating colleague, Aaron Sanchez.

"Look at them, raptors go! What a victory! The city is in turmoil! Keep it up guys! Said Toronto pitcher Matt Shoemaker.

The Raptors host the Golden State Warriors on Thursday in the opening game of the NBA Finals. The Warriors, led by Stephen Curry, competed in five consecutive league finals, winning the title three times.
