Max Verstappen has become accustomed to winning the "driver of the day" title in the last Grand Prix races this season. He did it again in Monaco with a brilliant fighting effort to question the winner of the race, Lewis Hamilton.
Red Bull was in second place for much of the race and heightened pressure on Hamilton in the final laps, even making contact with the Mercedes at some point before the New Chicane.
But not only could Verstappen find no way out, he was also compromised by a five-second penalty that eventually demoted him from the podium when it was finally applied after the race.
"Of course it's a shame to have a penalty, but I give everything I need today to miss Lewis," said Verstappen after the finish.
"I knew that he was on a softer tire and had to drive more slowly to preserve them.That 's why I started pushing after the pit stop.
"He took things very easily once we stopped, so I started to push him and he had to accelerate.
"Lewis had to accelerate, which meant that his tires would suffer, I saw him struggling at times and so I tried to attack him.
"The problem is that you can not get close enough into the tunnel to launch an attack, so I tried to keep the pressure on him, my front wing was stuck to the ground, but you can not overtake here.
"With a few laps to go, I decided to try and see what would happen, and we touched a bit."
Verstappen's front right tire made a brief contact with Hamilton's left-back, losing both to the chicane. Since both pilots eventually cut the corner, the stewards who investigated the incident after the race felt that no further action was necessary.
Instead, Verstappen had been given a more precarious five-second penalty while he was released in the pit lane, which brought him from second to fourth place in clbadified results. He also received two penalty points for his super license in F1.
The Dutch driver was sent off the Red Bull stand next to Hamilton teammate Valtteri Bottas. The Finn had an alleged puncture following the collision and was forced to make a second pit stop while the race was still neutralized behind a safety car.
Fortunately, the Verstappen car was not damaged during the incident, which earned him a second place, which allowed him to exert all the pressure he could on Hamilton.
"I had a fun race and if you look at our pace, we did a good job," summed Verstappen. "It's a shame [about the penalty]we drove well and deserved a podium. We were fast. "
