According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. A dermatologist in the region warns consumers against the sun during the warmer months.

Lisa Brown, a medical badistant at Skin & Vein Center, said skin cancers are appearing in younger and younger people.

Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, which are caused by

Sun exposure is found in people in their early forties, whereas it was prevalent only in people 60 years and older. Rates for both cancers have increased dramatically since the 1970s, according to the AAD.

Basal cell carcinoma increased by 145% between 1976 and 1984, and between 2000 and 2010.

"So many people are exposed to the sun and use a tanning bed so you see a lot of basal cells at an earlier age," she said. This guy is normally non-lethal and will not metastasize if caught early.

If melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer that can spread to other parts of the body, is not detected "very early", it can be fatal. Brown saw melanoma in a person in their thirties.

"They are both caused by the sun and both by tanning. Melanoma also has a genetic link, "said Brown, adding that melanoma will also appear in places where the sun can not reach. This type of skin cancer has tripled in American adults since the 1970s, according to the National Cancer Institute.

She attributed the increased risk of skin cancer to the popularity of tanning beds in the '80s and' 90s and the evolution of the ozone layer.

"The biggest thing I say to people, is to stop the use of tanning beds," she said. Some countries have banned tanning beds or imposed age restrictions on them. "I think it should be on the billboards – the tanning beds cause cancer."

She expects that America will end up with stricter laws or a total ban on tanning beds.

About one in five Americans will develop skin cancer during their lifetime, and about 9,500 people in the United States are diagnosed daily, according to the AAD. Nearly 20 Americans die every day of melanoma.

Staying out of the sun and using sunscreen is the best way to protect yourself against skin cancer. Brown recommends mineral-based sunscreens with SPF 30 or higher.

Mineral sunscreens are becoming more and more popular, offering people another option than chemical sunscreens. Mineral products contain titanium and zinc or other metals and are more effective than chemical sunscreens. These create a physical barrier that reflects the sun of the skin.

The Federal Drug Administration has found these ingredients safe.

The main misconception is that people think their face is protected because their moisturizer contains SPF.

"It only takes 90 minutes. If you look at the back of the bottle, some say 80, others 90. After 90 minutes, it's like nothing on the skin. Renew the application every 90 minutes, "she said.

For sensitive skin, she recommends a mineral powder SPF by Peter Thomas Roth that you apply on your face. Neutrogena and Aveeno are two brands of sunscreen that she recommends.

"Something recommended by a dermatologist," Brown said. "The most important thing is" reapply ".

Some chemicals found in other sunscreens have been subjected to scrutiny because they could harm the environment and disrupt the normal hormonal functions of the body. The sunscreen to oxybenzone was banned in Hawaii after research had revealed that it was partially responsible for the damage to coral reefs. It is also a potential endocrine disruptor and a testosterone drop in teenage boys, according to the Environmental Working Group, a sunscreen monitoring agency.
