Nissan Motor president Hiroto Saikawa is scheduled to meet on Wednesday with the leaders of his alliance partner, Renault. Their agenda should focus on a merger proposal from another automaker, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles or FCA.
FCA has made this offer to the French manufacturer Renault, which has announced its intention to consider this project.
Renault President Jean-Dominique Senard will also be sitting with his Nissan counterparts and the other alliance partner, Mitsubishi Motors.
Saikawa told reporters Monday that Nissan was not involved in discussions on the merger between Renault and FCA.
He described the move as positive, but added that he would be watching the impact of such an agreement on Nissan's rights and contractual issues with Renault.
Prior to the announcement of the FCA offer, the French manufacturer was seeking to integrate management with Nissan. But the Japanese partner rejected this idea.
Some Nissan officials pointed out that FCA was a direct competitor in the key North American market. They also fear that a merger with FCA would give more weight to Renault in its alliance with Nissan.
