Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen said that Ghana is currently the most important destination in Africa for Austria and its companies.

Mr Van der Bellen made this revelation on Monday in closed-door discussions with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in Vienna, capital of Austria.

Speaking about the purpose of his presence at the R20 summit, President Akufo-Addo badured his Austrian counterpart that Ghana was ready to face the phenomenon of climate change.

Climate change, the president stressed, is the biggest threat to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and has become a matter of grave concern to most world leaders because it has a huge impact on the fundamentals needed for survival of the human species the earth, ie rising sea levels, extreme and extreme weather conditions, such as droughts, floods and irregular rainfall, and increasing desertification.

"It is in our interest to act to save the continent's economic fortunes and, even more, to intensify our collective efforts to fight climate change resolutely," he added.

President Akufo-Addo is in Austria to attend the Austrian World Summit R20 – an initiative that helps regions, countries and cities to implement the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and achieve protection goals defined by the Agreement.

He attends the Summit in his capacity as Co-Chair of the United Nations Secretary-General's Panel of Advocates on the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and will participate on Tuesday, May 28, in the High Level Round Table on the need for Leadership in the global process of sustainable development and international cooperation.

While in Austria, the President will also hold bilateral talks with Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz; with the President of Hungary, János Áder; and with the Executive Director of the World Bank, Kristalina Georgieva.

He should also meet members of the Ghanaian community living in Austria.
