The growing resistance to antibiotics – caused by the oversupply of certain drugs – is considered by the United Nations as a global health emergency.

Today, scientists believe that the high levels of antibiotics recorded in the world 's watercourses further aggravate the situation. In the most severe cases – found in countries like Bangladesh, Ghana, and Kenya – levels were hundreds of times higher than levels considered safe.

Alistair Boxall, from York University, leads the research and explains how antibiotics end up in the waterways.
