Two bats have been tested positive in rabies in Tulare County, said Tuesday the Tulare County Health and Social Services Agency.

The agency recommends to the community to be very careful about bats and never touch them with bare hands.

Rabid bats were found in Tulare and south Visalia.

In a press release, Dr. Karen Haught, Public Health Officer for Tulare County, said, "Bats with abnormal behavior, such as being active during the day, sitting on the ground, or unable to stealing or avoiding contact are more likely to get rabies. Do not try to manipulate bats, whether they are at home, on your property or in a public place; call your local animal control service instead.

Last year, 13% of bats tested by the Tulare County Public Health Laboratory had rabies.

Rabies is a serious and deadly disease, the agency said. In case of exposure, it is possible to prevent the disease with a safe vaccine and immunoglobulin.

If a bat is found, the agency recommends wearing thick gloves to cover it with a box or box and ask for help from the animal control.

If a person comes into contact with a bat, the ministry recommends that you contact the Tulare County Communicable Disease Office at (559) 685-5720.
