Accra, May 30, GNA – It is necessary to
citizens must be fully informed about the Right to Information Act (RTI),
before it is fully implemented.
This is because this understanding is essential for
the successful implementation of the RTI.
Mr. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Minister of
Information, said this Thursday in Accra, during a day of workshops devoted to
the implementation of the RTI.
He said considering the fact that "we
tried to do it over and over, it's important for us to define
the right context for what will follow. "
For example, the Minister observed that
Many felt that the RTI Act was a law giving people the right to
information, but said that right, was already enshrined in the 1992
Constitution.
The Minister of Information said that the RTI, when
fully implemented, would fundamentally allow people to exercise this right.
He said at the moment, the most difficult part of the job,
was how to get everyone to understand RTI the best way possible.
"For us at the Ministry of Information,
the law is the result of the collaboration that made it adopt, sanctioned
to and ready for implementation, "Nkrumah said.
The minister said that it was important now that
through this same collaboration, ensure the effective implementation of the RTI.
He said that as of January 2, 2020, the RTI Act
would be operational, and it took a lot of work now.
The Minister encouraged stakeholders to
their best efforts for effective implementation of the ITR, stating:
"We ask you to present your ideas so that we have a very good
implementation ", on May 21, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo gave the floor to
approval of the law on the right to information, adopted by Parliament in March
this year, 2019.
While the right to information is inscribed
in the 1992 Ghana Constitution, the country struggled to move from
Law on the Right to Information since 1999.
President Akuffo-Addo said well
applied, the act could prove to be an essential tool in the fight against corruption.
