Some victims of violence
The Indians of Kokomba and Chokosi living in Accra call their counterparts in Chereponi and its environs to refrain from attacking each other.
Their appeal follows the resumption of clashes between Kokombas and Chokosis on May 19, 2019.
The clashes resulted in the destruction of property, causing injuries. One was confirmed dead.
Following this, a bipartisan delegation went to the region to dialogue with leaders of both ethnic groups to ensure peace.
At a press conference held in Accra on Thursday, May 30, leaders of both groups in Accra said the two communities were neighbors and had to strive to live in harmony.
They condemned the clashes in Chereponi, saying the incident was "baseless".
They noted that Chokosis and Kokombas have been married several times and continue to have mutual relations; therefore, a ceasefire between the two communities is needed.
The leaders of both groups also instructed their counterparts in the north to emulate them, as they live together peacefully in Accra as a people.
"We, at Kokomba Yam Market, the Wood Market or the Old Fadama Market, will not allow an unfortunate situation like that of Naduni around Chereponi to happen here …", they said.
They said the clashes were unjustified, accusing security personnel of bringing all perpetrators to make a reservation.
