The government is in the process of acquiring 8,000 cameras across the country as part of anti-crime measures.
According to Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, this measure is part of the measures taken to digitize the police information system.
Dr. Bawumia said this at a Business Roundtable forum held Wednesday by Ishmael Yamson and Associates.
The vice president said the government is committed to providing the country's police service with adequate resources to help it fight crime effectively; adding that 1,000 cameras had already been deployed across the country.
"We have deployed about 1,000 cameras across the country with a central monitoring center in Accra, Tamale and Kumasi. The three centers will monitor the 16 regions. So the 1000 cameras are just the first phase.
"The second phase will consist of a deployment of 8,000 additional cameras. We want to have a situation in which the police are very much helped in their fight against crime with real-time data so that we can see what is happening virtually everywhere we can. It really helps, "said Dr. Bawumia.
The vice president has repeatedly reaffirmed the government's commitment to digitizing the economy by ensuring the use of modern technology and systems.
The government will not accept money for service delivery until 2020
The Vice President also announced the digitization of all transactions in the public sector by June 2020.
He pointed out that a pilot exercise had already been conducted at the Ministry of Tourism prior to implementation.
