The MP for Tamale North Alhbadan Suhuyini said: "We are all guilty" for the repeated flooding of parts of the capital, Accra, whenever it was raining.
The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) announced the death of three people Wednesday in the strong shower of the capital.
Heavy rains have caused flooding in several areas of Accra, including the flooded areas of the capital, Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Odawna and Dome.
"We all have a role to play in controlling these floods. Leadership has a role to play in the fight against floods and we are all part of it, "Suhuyini told Morning Starr host Francis Abban on Friday.
He added: "Most people build in streams, most dump garbage into drainage systems, and so on. We have reduced our value as a country by maximizing or losing votes. We are all guilty of that in a way. "
Suhuyini added, "It's tiring to talk about the same thing every year. Floods, loss of life and property, badysis of speeches and insurance, emergency numbers, leaders wandering through floodwaters to conduct an badessment, and so on. We are so lucky that we have become so lazy. I say that because we can not compare our floods to the tsunami and other disasters that others are facing. "
In June 2016, a two-year contract was awarded to Dredge Masters Limited for remediation and dredging of the Odaw Channel and restoration of the Korle Lagoon to avoid perpetual floods in Accra.
The scope of work also includes the redesign and construction of the KLERP interceptor and the breakwater at the outlet. The channel located in the field of application runs from the confluence Odaw Onyasia to Carprice in Accra, pbading through Avenor, the Kwame Nkrumah interchange and the Agbogbloshie-South Kaneshie drain (upper and lower lagoon).
The dredging and transportation operations in Odaw Channel and Korle Lagoon began in April 2019 and, according to the company, have already destroyed more than one million cubic meters of waste from the Odaw River and the lagoon of Korle.
