Donald Trump was shocked by the comments Meghan Markle made on him during his 2016 presidential campaign.
The president of the United States has described his remarks as "villains" in a move that may not collapse before his visit to the UK next week.
The Duchess of Susbad once called Mr. Trump "misogynist" and "divisive" before supporting rival Hillary Clinton as prime minister.
She also hinted that she would leave the United States if Mr. Trump won, adding "you do not want to live in the kind of world that he paints".
In an interview with The Sun, the US leader said, "I did not know, what can I say?
"I did not know she was mean."
Mr. Trump will meet with Meghan's husband, Prince Harry, as well as the Queen, Prince Charles, William and Kate on his trip, which begins Monday.
Meghan will not be attending since she is officially on maternity leave after Archie's birth last month.
However, Prince Harry has made several commitments during his paternity leave.
According to sources, the Duchess's absence was intended to avoid a potentially difficult confrontation with the president.
Meghan made his critics during an interview in 2016 on the American talk show The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore.
She said, "We are shooting Suits in Toronto and I may stay in Canada.
"Yes, of course, Trump is a dividing factor, think only of voters.
"I think it was in 2012 that the Republican Party lost the women's vote by 12 points.
"It's a huge number and as misogynistic as Trump, and so vocal about it, it's a huge piece.
"You do not vote for a woman if it is Hillary.
"Yes, you vote because she is a woman, but Trump made it clear that you do not really want that kind of world that he paints."
Trump is usually extremely noisy against his critics, but after his "nasty" comment, he seems to be turning around.
He then praised Meghan, saying that she would make "a very good American princess".
About the Los Angeles-born royal, he said, "That's nice, and I'm sure she'll do very well.
"She will be very good, I hope she succeeds."
He added that he did not understand that they would not meet, adding, "I hope she's fine."
The royal family traditionally has no political opinion, although Prince Charles has been very candid in the past about climate change.
Trump pulled the United States out of the Paris deal after his election as head of the group and the two men are unlikely to know anything.
During the interview, Mr. Trump said, "I love Charles. I think that's fine.
"We speak. I can say that we currently have the cleanest climate in the world. "
President Trump violated the royal protocol during his visit to the United Kingdom last summer, in which he made the queen wait and walked in front of her.
He revealed that he was excited to see her again, describing him as a great honor.
This time he will bring his four adult children and their spouses during the three-day state visit.
He stated that he hoped that Ivanka, Tiffany, Eric and Donald Junior would hold a "next generation" meeting with Princes William and Harry.
During the interview, Mr. Trump also rallied to Boris Johnson in the battle for the Conservative party leadership.
He should meet arch-Brexiteer as well as Nigel Farage during what has been termed "executive time" in his schedule.
Downing Street seemed relatively relaxed about the controversial meetings. A source said: "What the president meets during his visit is a matter for him".
It is believed that Theresa May delayed her departure from number 10 to meet with Trump and avoid the leadership race that would overshadow his trip.
As during last year's visit, protesters plan to take to the streets and the baby airship could fly again.
Mr Trump said that the UK "really likes it", but the weather police are preparing an extensive security operation.
