The chief of police for research and planning, COP Nathan Kofi Boakye has observed that the capacity of illiterate cyber-fraudsters to thwart academics, including professors, and to trick them of millions of cedis goes to beyond education.
He revealed that the issue was about intelligence and not about academics or technologies calling on Ghanaians to be wary of the kind of schemes they are interested in.
"Do not forget that our Sakawa boys who are uneducated make duped teachers … they make dupes they are supposed to know better. This shows that the fight against crime does not only concern academics (…). Fighting crime is not just about technology, but about intelligence, "he said in a speech to the Ghana Association of Accountants (AWAG) in Tamale, covered by MyNewsGh.com.
The police chief stressed the importance of technology in the fight against crime but said the emerging threats are huge, which explains how easy it has become thanks to technology nowadays.
"Crime has become easy to commit, perpetrators have become sophisticated while society does not fit the sophisticated nature of criminals, so the challenges to be met," he said.
According to him, cybercrime is gaining ground lately and human trafficking calls for measures to mitigate the effects of these crimes that have a negative impact on society.
COP, Kofi Boakye, spoke under the theme "Threats and Challenges for Security, Mitigation Measures," warning accountants to stay awake so as not to fall victim to fraud in the exercise of their functions.
