The Ministry of Health said the demands of the striking morgue workers were too scandalous to be met.
According to the ministry, although it hired workers to find a lasting solution to the impbade, they demand among other things an "abnormal" increase of 3,000% of their monthly wages.
The morgue workers' strike has entered its third day, creating discomfort for families in search of corpses. They say that they will not cancel their strike until their demands are met.
Elorm Ametepe, the ministry's public relations officer, told Eyewitness News that the badociation's concerns far outweighed its strengths, hence the need to make them more reasonable.
"Now the problem goes beyond the initial requirements they had formulated. They have now presented a very ambitious proposal. The first is a 3000% salary revision, which should be consistent with the single-pillar salary structure. They want the increases to take effect from 2009 since the implementation of the system. Workers also claim a special 90% risk allowance on their base salary each month. They even want to retire with the salary of 3,000% that they ask for. These workers want to receive a lump sum after working for ten years in the form of an end-of-service allowance. I think it's way above what the department can offer. "
"So we brought them to the negotiating table to discuss the way forward. They approached the Fair Wages and Salaries Committee but decided not to go through the evaluation process. We are ready to engage them and not put them in an uncomfortable position. But they must also make sure that they meet the requirements of the government of the day. Nobody can pay them a 3000% salary increase, "he added.
At the morgue of Korle Bu University Hospital, people who came to search for the bodies of their relatives were turned away.
The morgue agents under the generic name of MOWAG, the Ghana Mortuary Workers Association, are struggling with the government to increase their wages and improve their conditions of service for several months.
The national president of the badociation, Edward Mensah, said the strike would continue until their demands are met.
Unless the government hears us, calls us and we understand and our people are in agreement [before] we will cancel the strike. Maybe they (bereaved families) should postpone their funerals or that sort of thing. We do not fight with the family, but rather they should talk to the government to get along and then we all go together, "he told Citi News.
This is the second time that morgue workers are going on strike after a similar strike on March 4, 2019.
This strike was interrupted, however, three days after the government's badurances.
However, negotiations between the badociation and the Commission on just wages and salaries seem to have broken down, forcing workers to redefine their tools.
