Get your bodies – Ministry of Health from bereaved families

The Ministry of Health badured the bereaved families that they could always fetch the bodies of their relatives from morgues in public health facilities.

"We have developed an alternative arrangement to allow families to recover their bodies and we have also conducted follow-ups to ensure their success. The information we received from the institutions indicates that there is no reason to be alarmed because they are open, "said the spokesman of the Ministry of Health.

The ministry's statement came days after the morgue workers had declared a strike promising to return to work if the government responded to their demands.

The Ghana Mortuary Workers' Association (MWAG) is calling for a 300% increase in its base salary starting in 2019 and also wants to retire with a salary increase, among other demands.

But Mr. Elorm Ametekpe, the ministry's public relations officer, spoke on the GBC British television program "Behind the News" in an interview with MyNewsGh.com.

Indeed, it means that the problem will probably persist.

Mr. Elrom Ametekpe, however, refuted allegations that morgues were closed to bereaved families, adding that the persons concerned should report to the ministry if they encountered government-run morgues that were not functioning.

This is not the first time that the country's death workers are laying down their tools. This year alone, there has been more than twice the threat of strike on their part, demanding good conditions of service.
