Government Will Not Make War on Crime With "8,000 Additional CCTV Cameras"

The government has announced that it will soon deploy some 8,000 CCTVs across the country to improve the fight against crime.

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia said on Wednesday that the government wants the police fight against crime to be supported by real-time data.

"We have deployed about 1,000 cameras across the country with a central monitoring center in Accra, Tamale and Kumasi. The three centers will monitor the 16 regions. So, the 1,000 cameras are just the first phase.

"The second phase will consist of a deployment of 8,000 additional cameras," said the vice president.

The government is in the process of acquiring 8,000 cameras across the country as part of anti-crime measures, "said Vice President at a round table organized by Ishmael Yamson & Associates.

He explained that the deployment of surveillance cameras was part of a project to digitize the police information system. The Vice President did not, however, give a timetable for the deployment of the 8,000 new cameras.

The Vice President also promised that Ghana's economy would soon be overpaid.

Mr. Bawumia also asked the business community to be ready to adopt new technologies to remain competitive.

Wave of criminal activity

In January of this year, police revealed that two specialized units of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have joined forces to quell the recent wave of crimes in many parts of the country.

A statement by the director of Ghana's public affairs directorate said that all its resources were mobilized to deal with the security situation.
