The eyes flickered as she tried to hold back her tears. The weather did not prevent such a reservoir from pouring rain in Accra.
The same rains the same day, an army captain, Maxwell Adam Mahama, was clubbed with clubs and cement blocks until his death.
Late Wednesday morning in Accra, at the Airport Hills roundabout, a statue of a captain with an elegant look and bronze hue, at ease, a gun to his right – in the interior of his stone pants.
Slightly postulated in a way that suggests, he was ready to tear him up against a violent target. But it's a statue. In reality, it was nothing of the sort. How can it be then that those who surrounded him were his fellow Ghanaians?
What he did instead was to beg his attackers to refrain from lynching him. This sad plea is captured in the statue with the left hand stretched out, five fingers out as a sign, ordering gently – stop.
They did not do it.
Soldiers flanked by the roadside to see the statue. His wife and family arrived at the opening ceremony, which was attended by Defense Minister Dominic Nitiwul and Interior Minister Ambrose Dery.
The government erected the statue at an undisclosed price. Under the statue, the name of the president, Nana Akufo-Addo, and under his name, a short biography of the remarkably brief career of a high-flying soldier.
One of Mahama's children hang out in the family. He gripped the legs of a family member who also stroked him to protect him.
His widow, Barbara, laid a wreath, just like the government and prayers were recited on the statue, on the family, on the government and against the people's justice.
