Ebola cases have slightly decreased in recent weeks in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), but this decline should be interpreted with extreme caution, due to the complexity of the epidemic. environment and precarious security situation, said the World Health Organization (WHO) in a statement. Part of the decline reflects a decrease in the number of cases in Katwa, which has been the main epicenter of Ebola in recent weeks, said the UN agency.

In addition to a decline in the number of cases, WHO indicated in its latest status report that it saw other encouraging signs, including a decrease in the number of health care-related infections and deaths in the community.

In addition, responders in the event of an outbreak report a higher proportion of contacts that register when cases are detected.

"Security problems routinely damage operations and the risk of national and regional spread remains very high," said WHO.

The latest diseases bring the total number of cases to 1,945, including 1,851 confirmed and 94 probable infections.

Health officials are still investigating 383 suspected cases.

Six other people died of the Ebola virus, including a patient in a community facility in Katwa and five people in Ebola treatment centers, including three in Butembo and two in Mabalako.

The total number of deaths is now 1,287.

All alerts in the affected areas, in other provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo and in neighboring countries continue to be monitored and investigated, said the UN agency.
