Hundreds of guests gathered at the Hyatt Regency on May 10 to support the 15th annual Summit Foundation Gala for Cystic Fibrosis. This 70s gala, as announced at the party, featured buffet-style gourmet restaurants; wine offered free Santa Rita 120; the popular Sobeys candy buffet; a photo booth on the theme of the 70s; dance at DJ Flo; great live and silent auctions; Games; guest gifts; and powerful speeches delivered by keynote speakers Marten DevLieger – 37 years old living with CF – and Dr. Paul Kubes, director of the Snyder Institute for Chronic Disease.

DevLieger gave guests a glimpse of her life as a father and husband. In 2017, he invented a wireless thoracic therapy vest widely used in North America for CF patients to help release mucus that clogs the airways. Kubes described the steps taken to make the Snyder Institute the best place in the world for lung disease research.

Perhaps the most memorable moment of the evening was the magnificent speech by Gala President and Gala Founder Nicki Perkins, in which she shared excerpts from her documentary, Fighting for Breath, available on YouTube. His remarks and video clips brought the room into tears. Sperm and spark from Perkins show that CF is destroying his lungs. Unshakeable, she calls herself a CF warrior. Apt indeed.

Guests, donors and sponsors raised more than $ 289,000 tonight, donating funds to core laboratories of the Nicole Perkins microbial communities of the Snyder Institute for Chronic Disease at the Cumming School of Medicine from the University of Calgary. Longtime donors Lenny and Phyllis Shapiro have announced an additional $ 250,000 commitment to the lab, ensuring that the evening will be remembered.

Among the more than 300 guests were the following directors: Dr. Nancy Brager, Dr. Tanya Yeast, Dr. Rhea Solis, Dr. Colleen Zeller, Dr. Harvey Rabin and Dr. Domenic Mandato; Neil Zeller from Neil Zeller Photography; Stephen Fuchs of Canadian View; Bernado Perez of Rayacom Printing; Sobeys Jim Johnston; Joanna Wall of Astra Zeneca; Michelle Caldwell of WestJet; and others in the photo.
