"Our dear group member, Jose Antonio Reyes, has died as a result of a road accident," the club said.
Reyes made his name playing for Sevilla, where he began his career as a young player in their football academy. Reyes made his professional debut for the club in 2000, at the age of 16.
Arsenal tweeted that everyone at the club was "devastated" by the news, claiming that Reyes was "an extremely popular personality in our club", who "would always occupy a special place in our hearts".
Thierry Henry, who played at Arsenal alongside him, paid tribute to Reyes as a "formidable player, outstanding teammate and outstanding human being", and offered his condolences to the footballer's family and friends.
Spanish International
Reyes was also a Spanish international, with 21 caps for his country, and represented his country at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
The Spanish Football Federation presented its condolences on Twitter.
"The RFEF (Real Federación Espanola de Futbol) expresses its condolences for the death of Jose Antonio Reyes."
The 35-year-old footballer also played for Benfica in Portugal, before returning to Seville in 2011. His last top-division team in Spain was Espanyol, where he played a season in 2016.
The club also tweeted their support.
"RCD Espanyol, we wish to express our sincere condolences and address all our support to the family and those of Seville," said the club.
The Spaniard was currently playing for the Spanish Second Division Extremadura.
On Saturday, the team tweeted the news of his untimely death "with a reduced soul and a broken heart," adding, "We ask everyone to pray for his soul."
