NDC of Ashanti region notified opposition to EC registration procedure
Despite a court ruling to prevent the National Democratic Congress (NDC) from opposing a demonstration against the limited voter registration operation of the Electoral Commission, party leaders announced that the protest would continue as planned.
"The sun or the rain, we will demonstrate peacefully," said Isham Alhbadan, NDC regional organizer for Ashanti, at Nhyira FM, based in Kumasi, during a phone interview followed by MyNewsGh.com.
The NDC of the Ashanti region had notified its opposition to the EC registration procedure on Monday 3 June 2019.
Police in the Ashanti region have obtained a court order prohibiting the NDC from organizing such an event. Police said the NDC protest should be postponed due to logistical challenges to the police during the Ramadan celebrations, as Muslims in the country should end their fast one day after the scheduled date of the protest.
However, with regard to the latest development, the NDC regional organizer said: "We have received the injection order but we will continue to demonstrate in accordance with the laws of the country".
"The new twist is that we have changed the place of departure from the Aboabo post office instead of our regional party office," said regional organizer, Aduanaba Kofi Asante Ennin.
The umbrella family says it manifests because about one million Ghanaians would be deprived of voting rights if the EC were allowed to undertake restricted voter registration at district and certain constituency levels.
