Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia on Thursday reaffirmed the government's resolve to address the critical development challenges facing the north to promote inclusive development.

He said adequate investments in critical areas, in particular; Education, health and agriculture were needed to change the history of the north of the country.

Dr. Bawumia said this at the opening of the first Northern Ghana Development Conference in Tamale on Thursday.

The two-day conference, attended by development partners, non-governmental organizations, public institutions and other stakeholders, aims to bring out ideas on critical development issues affecting the north of the country.

It was organized by the Northern Regional Coordinating Council and the Northern Development Authority, in partnership with the STAR Ghana Foundation, among other development partners.

Mr Bawumia said that modernization of agriculture is one of the surest ways to fight poverty and accelerate development in the north of the country, hence the implementation of the Plant for Food and Employment program. He added that other initiatives, such as a village, a dam and a district plant, aimed to promote inclusive development, which was the core of the government's development agenda. Dr. Bawumia urged participants to take advantage of the conference to examine the critical development challenges facing the North and to propose the best way to solve them.

He also stressed the need for all to commit to peace while the government was working to ensure equitable development across the country.

Mr Philip Smith, DFID Country Director and Chairman of the Heads of Cooperation, said that although the Government of Ghana, beyond the aid, was signaling that it was necessary to abandon the situation. Aid for Trade, development partners would continue to help the country to improve its different sectors inequality.

Mr. Alhbadan Mohammed Awal, Executive Director of NORSAAC, who read a speech on behalf of STAR Ghana Foundation, emphasized the need for the country to capitalize on innovations and make better use of resources to promote sustainable development.
